- Give each film one audience, one message and a clear destination.
- Count edited versions, not only filming hours or finished seconds.
- Decide framing, captions, audio and approval responsibilities before the shoot.
- Scope photography separately when you also need catalog images.
“We need a product video” can describe a demonstration on a store page, a short social ad, an unboxing sequence or a launch film. Those projects can share footage, but they do not automatically share the same scope.
Use this brief to turn the idea into a production conversation. Product advertising videography in NYC covers planning a physical-product shoot. For leadership interviews or company stories, see corporate video production.
Start with the viewer’s question
Write down what someone should understand after watching. For example: how a clasp opens, how a bag changes shape, what fits inside a container, or how a tool is held. Pick the question that motion can answer clearly.
Then identify the audience. A first-time shopper may need an introduction; an existing customer may only need instructions for a new attachment. Avoid trying to cover every feature and the entire brand story in one short sequence.
Supply the product’s actual instructions and approved claims. The brand should substantiate performance statements before they appear in voiceover or graphics. A filmed demonstration is not proof that an item will perform identically in every situation.
Separate the product-page film from the advertisement
On a product page, a visitor may already know the item’s name and want a useful explanation. An ad often needs to establish context quickly and finish with an approved next step. The opening, pacing and closing frame can therefore differ even when some shots are shared.
| Deliverable | Decision to make before filming |
|---|---|
| Product-page demonstration | Which feature or action must remain understandable? |
| Social advertising version | What is the opening idea and approved closing message? |
| Additional orientation | Does the composition work vertically and horizontally? |
| Captioned version | Which spoken information needs an accurate text equivalent? |
| Alternate opening | Is it a separate edit or just a replacement title card? |
The table is a planning framework, not a promise that all versions are included. Put the required count into the quote. Two orientations, two openings and two languages can produce substantially more work than one master film.
Make the next step easy
Let's plan your video production.
Share the date, goal, and budget. We’ll route you to a photographer whose experience fits the assignment.

Write a short scene plan
For an illustrative reusable-bottle project, the sequence might be: show the bottle clearly, open the lid, fill it, show the carry loop in use, and finish on an unobstructed product frame. Each action needs the right sample, surface and handling plan.
Note what happens between takes. Does a surface need drying? Will packaging be damaged when opened? Is a spare sample necessary? Continuity includes details such as liquid level, label direction, hand position and the state of the product.
Bring references to explain light, pace or framing. A reference can guide the conversation, but recreating another brand’s film or using its footage is a different matter. Agree an original treatment for your own product.
Decide formats before the camera is set
Share the actual destinations: your store, landing page, organic social posts or paid placements. Ask your site or media contact for the intended display dimensions and current upload requirements. Plan room for captions and any interface overlays relevant to those placements.
Shopify’s product-media documentation explains the types of media supported on product pages. Check your own theme and destination requirements before agreeing exports. A playable file alone does not establish that its framing or presentation is right for the page.
If the film relies on spoken instructions, review captions for accuracy. If it must work without audio, check that the action remains understandable visually. Confirm music and voice permissions for the intended usage, including paid advertising where applicable.
Agree the review process and handoff
Choose one person to gather feedback from the brand, marketing and any other stakeholders. Conflicting comments from several people can turn a small revision into an unclear new brief. Name the approval stages and revision rounds in writing.
Clarify whether the deliverables include raw footage, project files, thumbnails, captions, still photographs or only final edited videos. Define how long project files are retained and whether later versions require a new quote.
A launch date needs time for review as well as production. Share the deadline before booking and ask whether the proposed schedule allows the necessary approvals. Same-day or rush work needs its own agreed plan.
A brief you can copy into your inquiry
Include the product and dimensions; the audience; the action or feature to demonstrate; intended channels; required edits and orientations; speakers or models; props and location; sample availability; approved claims; deadline; and the final approver.
You do not need every answer to begin. Mark uncertain items so they can be discussed rather than silently assumed. Request a business video quote with the details you know.
Need photographs too? Compare catalog product photography and use the catalog shot-list guide. Dedicated stills can require different lighting and resolution; extracting frames from a film should not be the default delivery plan.
