The Famous Light Beams

Timing is everything.

The iconic light beams streaming through Grand Central's windows don't appear all day. They require specific conditions: direct sunlight, correct sun angle, and relatively clear skies. We track the conditions and schedule accordingly when this is your priority.

Best months

October-March when sun is lower and hits the east windows directly

Best time

Late morning (10am-12pm) when light streams across the concourse

Weather

Needs sunny/partly cloudy. Overcast = no beams

Not guaranteed

We'll try, but nature doesn't always cooperate. We always have backup angles.

Common questions.

Do I need a permit to shoot in Grand Central?

For handheld, documentary-style photography, no permit is needed. Commercial shoots with equipment (tripods, lights, crews) require permits from MTA. We can help arrange if needed.

When is Grand Central least crowded?

Early mornings (before 8am) and weekends are quietest. Rush hours (7:30-9:30am, 5-7pm) are busy but actually create great energy for certain shots. Late evening after 9pm is also peaceful.

Can I do executive/corporate portraits here?

Absolutely—it's one of our most popular uses. The architecture conveys power and sophistication, perfect for executives, lawyers, and corporate branding.

Is it too busy to get clean shots?

The Main Concourse is large enough that we can often find pockets of space even during busy times. We also know angles that minimize background crowds, and motion blur can actually add energy to shots.

Can we combine Grand Central with nearby locations?

Yes! The Chrysler Building, 42nd Street, Bryant Park, and the New York Public Library are all walking distance. Our longer packages can incorporate multiple Midtown locations.
