You have an agency application open in one tab and a photographer's portfolio in another. The application asks for simple pictures. The portfolio shows dramatic light, beautiful clothing and carefully retouched skin. Which one are you supposed to buy?
Start with the recipient. Digitals show what you look like now. A test shoot explores how you can appear in a particular kind of work. Neither is automatically the right first purchase. If an application accepts straightforward photographs taken at home, paying for a session is a choice, not an admission requirement.
This guide helps you identify the deliverable before choosing a package. For the actual session options, compare model digitals photography and a commercial model test shoot.
The difference is the question each photograph answers
Digitals answer: can someone clearly see your current face, hair, shape and proportions? Styling should not obscure that information. A test answers a different question: can you communicate a particular mood, role, movement or commercial idea?
| Decision | Digitals | Commercial test |
|---|---|---|
| Starting document | Actual application or agency instructions | Portfolio review and creative brief |
| Main purpose | Accurate current appearance | Demonstrate a useful kind of range |
| Wardrobe | Simple and compliant with the request | Chosen to support a believable scene |
| Direction | Clear views and natural posture | Expression, movement and situation |
| Editing | Follow the recipient's restrictions | Agreed portfolio processing that preserves recognizability |
| Selection | Required views, in the required count | A concise sequence with different functions |
A glamorous photograph can be excellent creative work and still be wrong for a submission. Conversely, a plain full-length image can be exactly what an agency needs, even if it would not lead your public portfolio.
Use this three-question decision tree
1. Do you have specific instructions? If an agency or representative has requested current photographs, copy those instructions into your shoot brief. Include angles, clothing, file dimensions, file size and the submission deadline. Do not replace them with a photographer's standard package description.
2. Is your current appearance missing from your materials? If your hair, facial hair or general appearance has changed, a current set may be more useful than a new creative concept. Explain the change without assuming you need to rebuild your entire book.
3. Can you name a portfolio gap? “I want better photos” is hard to act on. “My book has serious close-ups but no convincing commercial smile or full-length movement” gives a test a purpose. If you cannot identify a gap, review what you already have before paying for more.
These questions can lead to a digitals session, a test, both on separately agreed terms, or no paid shoot yet. That is a useful outcome: the budget follows the need.
What to save from the application
Create a small requirements note containing the official application address, the division and city, the requested image types, any clothing restrictions, and the current upload limits. Add the date you checked it. Links can change, and instructions for one division should not be assumed to cover another.
For example, Wilhelmina's official application asks applicants to select a city and division and says minors need a parent or guardian's authorization. That does not make one universal photograph checklist suitable for every applicant.
IMG's official scouting guidance also warns that it does not require payment or nude or lingerie photographs. Verify the identity of anyone contacting you before sharing material or paying for a supposedly required photographer. Signal is independent of these agencies and cannot guarantee representation.
Compare quotes by the work, not the image count
A larger delivered gallery is not necessarily a better application. If the form requests a limited set, submitting extra pictures can simply fail to follow instructions. What matters is whether the package can produce the required views accurately and deliver usable files on time.
Ask what the estimate includes: session duration, outfits, location, permitted processing, selection method and final exports. Discuss studio rental separately. A plain background does not automatically mean a rented studio is required, but the actual setup must meet the brief.
For a test, add questions about concept planning, collaborators, location permissions and usage. Hair and makeup, wardrobe sourcing and a finished comp-card layout are separate tasks unless they appear in the written scope. Our model digitals cost guide explains the current package options without treating the largest one as the default.
An example of buying less, more deliberately
Imagine your application requests current straightforward views, while your existing portfolio already has several strong lifestyle images. The immediate task is the application set. A large creative shoot would spend money on photographs the recipient did not ask for.
Now imagine your agent has accepted your current digitals but wants a more approachable commercial direction. Repeating the digitals may add very little. A focused test with one simple story, two related looks and varied framing could serve that note better.
These are illustrative decisions, not client success stories. There is no guaranteed sequence from photographs to representation or paid work.
Before confirming a date
Write a one-sentence objective, attach the relevant instructions and identify the deadline. Ask to see the proposed photographer's work that matches the task. Confirm the setting, processing, final files and separate costs in writing.
If both digitals and creative work are needed, ask how the session will protect the time for each. Keep the output sets labeled separately so you do not later send a heavily styled test image where a current unembellished view was requested.
The right starting point is the smallest clear brief that solves the need in front of you. Explore the model portfolio options once that need is clear, then choose the session that actually fits.
